Baia Mare Institute of Philosophy is officially part of the Department of Social Sciences, Theology and Arts within the Faculty of Humanities at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca – North University Centre of Baia Mare.
Our university, founded in 1948, is one of the largest and most highly ranked higher education institutions in Romania (top 10), with 12 faculties grouped into two university centers: Cluj-Napoca and Baia Mare – the largest cities in the Northwest of Romania, the historical region of Transylvania. The two centers operate in close academic collaboration, offering a total of 219 study programs for more than 21.000 students enrolled in both technical fields and humanities. The Philosophy programs are based within the Faculty of Humanities, North University Centre of Baia Mare.
Founded in 1999, the Philosophy Institute at the North University Centre of Baia Mare is a distinguished academic institution offering European recognized Study Programs in Philosophy for all three levels of degrees: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Philosophy, Master of Art (M.A.) in Philosophy and Human Rights), and a Doctorate (PhD) in Philosophy. As a cornerstone of education and culture in Transylvania and Northern Romania, the Philosophy Institute in Baia Mare is committed to fostering critical thinking, rigorous research, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
Through its diverse and comprehensive curriculum, the Philosophy Institute provides students with a solid foundation in classical and contemporary philosophical thought, analytical reasoning, and ethical inquiry. The faculty comprises esteemed scholars dedicated to advancing philosophical research and engaging with both local and international academic communities.

The Philosophy Institute at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca – North University Centre of Baia Mare actively fosters international academic cooperation through partnerships with various higher education institutions. A key component of this international outreach is the department’s involvement in the Erasmus+ program, which facilitates academic mobility and cross-cultural learning experiences. Over the years, numerous students from Baia Mare have successfully undertaken study mobility programs abroad, enriching their academic and personal development. Academic Staff:
Professor emeritus Dr. Petru Dunca
Professor emeritus Dr. Petru DUNCA is the founder of the Philosophy program in Baia Mare (1999), where he has taught over the years Ancient Eastern Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy, Hermeneutics, Philosophy of Communication, Introduction to the Mass Media System and Media Theories, Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology, Political Philosophy, and other related subjects. He studied Philosophy and Anthropology at the University of Iași (1976–1980) and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1991–1994), obtaining his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iași in 1999. He is the author and editor of several books in his fields of research, including Being–Knowledge–Happiness in Post-Paninian Thinkers (2000), Introduction to the Philosophy of the Ancient East (2005), Knowledge and Action within the Knowledge-Based Society (2011), as well as numerous articles and studies in philosophy, ethnology, anthropology, and communication sciences. In 2007, he obtained the accreditation for the Doctoral School of Philosophy in Baia Mare (IOSUD-UTCN), where he continues to supervise doctoral research in the field of philosophy. Professor habil. Dr. Daniela Dunca
Professor habil. Dr. Daniela DUNCA teaches Rhetoric, Argumentation Techniques, General Logic, Modern Philosophy, History, Sources and Philosophy of Human Rights, and Applied Ethics. She obtained her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iași in 2005. She is the author of Hermeneutical Readings (2008) and The Foundations of Presocratic Philosophy (2006), and has coordinated and edited several volumes on ethics and communication, such as Experience & Explanation in the Knowledge Society (2018), Ethics and Communication. Theoretical Components and Pragmatic Implications (2015), and Constants and Reconfigurations in the Ethical Issues of Communication (2015). She is the coordinator of the Master’s Program in Human Rights (Philosophy field) and, since 2021, has been a doctoral supervisor within the Doctoral School of Philosophy (IOSUD-UTCN). Professor habil. Dr. Vasile Cătălin Bobb
Professor habil. Dr. Vasile Cătălin BOBB teaches Philosophical Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, Philosophical Propaedeutics, Ethics and Academic Integrity, History of Contemporary Philosophy, and Postmodern Philosophy. He obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca (2009), completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Iași Branch of the Romanian Academy (2010–2013), and was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship at Boston College (2021–2022). He is the author of Glimmers of Being. Mihai Șora and the Problem of the Human (2024), Pharmakon. Fragments of Text (2019), and Hermeneutics and the Problem of Evil in Paul Ricoeur’s Philosophy (2015). He currently serves as the coordinator of the Bachelor’s Program in Philosophy, and starting from 2025 he will be eligible to supervise doctoral research within the Doctoral School of Philosophy (IOSUD-UTCN). Professor Dr. Iovan Drehe
Professor Dr. Iovan DREHE teaches Philosophy of Science, Critical Thinking, Metaphysics, Political Philosophy and Theory, Ontology, History of Ancient Philosophy, Romanian Philosophy, and Axiology. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the West University of Timișoara (2007), a Master’s degree in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy from Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca (2008), and earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Babeș-Bolyai University in 2012. He has served as an associate lecturer at Babeș-Bolyai University (2012–2013) and as a visiting professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea (2020–2022). He has also worked as a researcher at the Romanian Academy – Iași Branch (2014–2015), Babeș-Bolyai University (2015–2017), the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB) (2017–2018), and as an associate researcher at the Czech Academy of Sciences (2019–2021). He has held research fellowships and study visits at the University of Geneva (2010), Central European University, Budapest (2010–2011, 2016), University of Groningen (2015), and University of Tours (2016). He has published books, studies, and translations on topics including the history of ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy, the history and theory of argumentation, political philosophy, and philosophy of science. Assistant Professor Dr. Andrei Achim
Assistant Professor Dr. Andrei Alexandru ACHIM teaches Symbolic Logic, Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, Gnoseology, and Philosophy of War. He studied at the University of Baia Mare, obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy within the Doctoral School of Philosophy in Baia Mare (2011), and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Iași Branch of the Romanian Academy (2012–2013). He is the author of the book To Say and to Show. Ontology in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (2006). Assistant Professor Dr. Dan Siserman
Assistant Professor Dr. Dan SISERMAN teaches History of Medieval Philosophy, Philosophy of History, Philosophical Anthropology, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophical Counseling. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Vienna (2012), a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca (2015), and earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Bucharest (2021). During his studies, he received research fellowships at the Universities of Tübingen (2016–17, 2018–19) and Freiburg (2017–18). He is the author of The Theology of History in Joachim of Fiore (2023), editor of the volume Spicilegium Philosophicum (2022), and has translated over fifteen books in philosophy, theology, and the history of ideas.
